Born in 1986 in Tabke, Syria, Ali Omar is a passionate artist whose journey into the world of art began in childhood. At the age of ten, he received his first set of oil paints during summer holidays, igniting a lifelong love for creativity. Despite early challenges, including discouragement from a teacher who dismissed art as a pursuit for “losers,” Ali’s determination prevailed, leading him back to painting and ultimately shaping his unique artistic path.
Ali pursued formal education in fine arts at the esteemed painting department of Damascus University from 2006 to 2011. Following his studies, he spent six months in Erbil before returning to Tabke, where he began to develop his artistic voice. His work draws inspiration from the mundane moments of everyday life and the organic movements of people and animals, exploring both the “ugly” and “beautiful” aspects of his subjects. Influenced by the masterful use of light in Rembrandt’s paintings and inspired by the works of Van Gogh, Schiele, and Klimt, Ali’s creative style reflects a deep appreciation for the emotional power of art.
A recurring theme in Ali’s portraits is an exploration of the human psyche, delving into desires, motives, and the interplay between the physical and spiritual realms. Through thoughtful use of shape, color, and form, he invites contemplation and provokes curiosity about existence and human nature. The transformation of color is another significant motif in his work.
Ali’s artistic journey has evolved significantly over the years. Initially focused on the process of creation, he later delved into the concept of death, finding inspiration in the idea of absolute serenity and perfection. His exploration led him to visit morgues and meticulously study ancient Egyptian drawings of funerary practices. Ultimately, he returned to the concept of life, viewing his portrait studies as expressions of a desire to embrace life’s abundance.
Since 2015, Ali has made Istanbul his home, dedicating himself fully to his artistic endeavors. Through his evocative and thought-provoking artworks, he continues to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression.
